Utility Categories?

You know what I'd love? Category:Zaraborgstrom Approved, Category:Zarabrowski Approved, and so on. I'd love to see some of the actual writers of the line pop in some times and see what they like and what they don't. Kukla 19:39, 4 April 2006 (EDT)

I didn't go for the Zarasomething because without word from the editors it doesn't make much sense. It's a very cool idea. - Democritus 13:53, 7 April 2006 (EDT)
It would certainly be nice to have the authors participating in the community, but I'm pessimisstic as to the odds of that. :( Kukla 14:35, 7 April 2006 (EDT)

Sidebar changes

The sidebar can be changed in MediaWiki to contain other links (once again, see http://www.modwiki.net for a live demo). This can be done by enabling the feature and then accessing and editing a certain page - something like exaltedwiki:sidebar or something. That would then allow us to add links to big pages to this section. Possibly pages like "Exalt Types" (which proivdes links to all exalt types), Content etc. for easy access. - Democritus 13:53, 7 April 2006 (EDT)

I'd be cool with changing that around a little. Feel free to create a proposal, and I'll have a look.  :) --Mike 14:05, 7 April 2006 (EDT)

It's located at MediaWiki:Sidebar. You can do a lot of fun things with it, namely, I think breaking out the store and links to other important pages would be key. Xeriar 16:55, 7 April 2006 (EDT)
The store... funny thing you mention it. Has anyone looked at the tooltip coming up when the cursor hovers on the "store" link? :) As for the discussion at hand, I'd remove the store link (and maybe Random Page) and put in links to pages showing the content of the category-boxes that now make up the main page. That'd be "Exalt Types"(too confusing as a link header, maybe?), "Fan Content" and "Resources"(containing Library and Rules). The fourth category could be used to expand the help page.
Which is a good idea in and of itself, so I might do it right now. -UrsKR
Adding a link to the HOW TO guide would be very cool too! Actually I believe that page would benefit from a rename... - hmmmDemocritus 04:55, 8 April 2006 (EDT)

1st and 2nd Edition separation

I am still not to convinced of the currently very strong separation of 1st and 2nd Edition. Often it's just a few different mechanics, while the background is still 95% the same. An example where this separation is mighty stupid (imho) is the GODS (or the exalt characters) section. Why are there First Edition and Second Edition Gods categories? I doubt anything has changed there besides stats. I still advocate the use of in-article templates to differentiate between 1st and 2nd edition Stats only. I'll make an example in Main Page/Proposed Organisation. - Democritus 15:33, 9 April 2006 (EDT)

I would be fine with having things laid out as you suggest (one page that shows both the First and Second Edition mechanics). Just so long as it's categorized appropriately. My concern isn't so much about the information itself, but rather in making sure that it's all organized well enough that people can get to the type of information they're looking for easily and intuitively.
My concern is for the future; I might be wrong in this, but down the road I see the vast majority of Exalted players using Second Edition. And personally, it would annoy me to not be able to browse for things that are applicable to me. But if I'm someone who wants to look at both First and Second Edition stuff at the same time, I should be able to do that, too. And I think with a smart application of Categories, we can cater to both types.
--Mike 19:20, 9 April 2006 (EDT)
Well, my intention was that the gods would be held in a simple Gods category and their edition-specific stats would be held in sub-pages and included using something like {{Characters:Dances_on_Rubies_and_Diamonds}}, possibly with a template involved. We just haven't reached that stage yet. Kukla 18:27, 10 April 2006 (EDT)
I'm fine with that; all I want is that there be (for example) a readily accessible "Second Edition Gods" category as well, so that if someone only wants to look at gods who have been statted out for Second Edition, they can do so. E.g. I have a spirit that I've statted out for First Edition, but not Second; it wouldn't show up in the "Second Edition Gods" category, but if I had statted it out for both First and Second Edition, it would. --Mike 11:10, 11 April 2006 (EDT)
That is true, that kind of categorisation would be needed. Still instead of having subpages for stats I'd rather use a template to clearly mark certain parts of an article as only applicable to one edition or another
--Democritus 13:08, 11 April 2006 (EDT)
That sounds fine -- probably simpler for people to see everything on one page (even if some of it is applicable to a different edition) than to have to click through to another page. Also simpler for the person adding the content. --Mike 13:50, 11 April 2006 (EDT)

Category Links on Main Page

This change is currently in progress

Hi, I'd like to propose that we don't have links to categories on the main page. I find categories a less intuitive method to browse for information the first time I visit a wiki. What I'd like to see is, for example, the 'Solars' link take you to Solars and on that page we have a user-maintained page much like the Main Page. Nicely organised, with descriptive links, sub pages, and whatever. ie, allowing us to make pages much like the front page for all the other sections. Another example would be the Errata page.

Basically, categories are helpful, but I don't think they can organise content as intuitively as people will be able to. Let the users themselves design the navigation style, and have categories as links shooting off from pages as they naturally do - at the bottom of the page. Let categories do the job they were designed to, and let humans organise the content. The main page looks great - so let's make that sort of page possible on the pages it links out to as well.

Linking to categories from the front page could still be maintained - because it does serve a useful function. Perhaps remove the (2nd Edition, 1st Edition) links and replace it with (Category) link. Then, when you click on a page like [[Solars] there you will see 2nd Edition content, unless explicitly labelled as 1st Edition. You will find yourself at a user-maintained front page for Solars with links to various parts of the site, and down the bottom of the page will be the usual categories link to Category:Second_Edition_Solar_Exalted and Category:First_Edition_Solar_Exalted.

Edited addendum: the Mediawiki website doesn't use categories as the primary means of having a user navigate the site. I find that method to be far more intuitive and useful for both visitors and maintainers. - Tyreth 21:19, 16 April 2006 (EDT)

We can build indices directly in to the category pages to make them much easier to navigate, which should solve much of the problem you're worried about. Kukla 22:20, 16 April 2006 (EDT):: I somewhat agree with the previous post. The category organisation get's quite confusing at times.... - Democritus 21:15, 27 April 2006 (EDT)

Alternatives to Creation

In the main page various references are made to Creation when in fact the setting of Exalted encompasses many places not considered to be part of Creation itself. Is there an alternate term that can be used here to explicitly include all of the varied facets of the Exalted setting (without explicitly saying "Exalted setting")? --deaks 16:16, 18 August 2006 (EDT)

I used the term Worlds as something that spans Creation, Yu-Shan, Malfeas, Undeworld, Autochthonia (we need a Template:Autobot to avoid spelling!)and Elsewhere. --Democritus

Thinking about removing the "external links" from the frontpage, now that resources works okayish.

Good point but I'm not sure if you can actually add external links there, but I added them. Maybe conrad puts em in... --Democritus

Other Character Types

I'd like to see this page expanded to include links to pages for the Fair Folk, the Mountain Folk, the Dragon Kings, the God-Blooded, Ghosts, and Heroes - in short, all of the other types of characters that can be played. Dataweaver

Should be doable. Maybe removing the subtext beneath each Exalted Type would free up enough spacewithout breaking the page Democritus

Randomness

Bodhisattva 14:48, 21 April 2007 (EDT): Is it possible on the Wiki to code drop-down boxes? That might help keep everything all visible on one page. I know it may be an odd suggestion, but it might help some with navigation.

Democritus: as far as I know, this is not possible but I'm open to suggestions on what to change on the page.

Style Sheets

I'd like to recommend a change in the way styles are used in many of this wiki's pages. Quite a few pages define tables containing the following style attributes:

class="MainPageBG" style="border: 1px solid #D2AC2D; color: #000; background-color: #FFFFEE"

This is a bad idea, because the use of the style attribute in a tag will always override the style sheet. So, if you wanted to change the style sheet, it would have no effect and you'd have to change each table that is built like this individually. In addition, such use of the style attribute makes skinning basically useless, because the attribute will override the skin and nothing a skin author could do would change that.

A better solution would be to define a "td.MainPageBG" style in the MediaWiki:Common.css page to use the border: 1px solid #D2AC2D; color: #000; background-color: #FFFFEE attributes, and then remove the style attribute from the tables (keeping the class attribute, of course). In this way, any skin that does not define the "MainPageBG" style inherits it from the common CSS. Then, skin authors can override this class in their own CSS (e.g. MediaWiki:Monobook.css) to match their skin. (If you "view source" on a page, you can see how the style sheets are included.)

A small change.

In the final version I would like to see a catagory added under the Setting heading. Namely Cultures like so,

Rearranging tabs

Would it be possible to move the "New User" tab to the top of the screen below the mission statement? I think it provides helpful links to new users and making it prominent would be more inviting to new editors (which we really need). Goddessgood · Mod · Talk 11:49, 1 February 2012 (EST)
