Greetings

WELCOME!
Welcome to my user talk page. Leave me a message if you'd like (I typically respond on my own talk page, unless you'd like me to reply elsewhere). I'm going to be making some changes here on my talk page in the near future, basically trying to clean up some of the conversations and group things a little better. Please feel free to leave constructive feedback at any time.

Talk Page E-mail Notifications

I just got an e-mail notification from Exalted Wiki, so it looks like maybe they've got somebody working on the problem. Robin Hood (Official Worker Caste Jadeborn) → talk 15:02, 5 March 2012 (EST)

Spammers

Starting a new subject, just because the old one was getting a bit long.

 • There have been a lot more recently, I've been marking them as I see them Goddessgood · Mod · Talk 14:02, 8 January 2012 (EST)
 • Seems to be escalating. 18 more over the weekend. I marked most of them this morning. Goddessgood · Mod · Talk 09:50, 30 January 2012 (EST)
Thanks for taking care of them. I think I've got a good procedure for tagging these, so going forward, I'll mark the User pages of spammers with the Spam template and the spam pages with the DeleteMe template. Hopefully that makes sense from an admin POV. Let me know if I need to change it up a bit. Goddessgood · Mod · Talk 11:22, 30 January 2012 (EST)
 • They've changed formulas again. Now they're creating accounts with a firstnamelastname pattern. The spam links all seem to be going through amazon.com. Would it be possible to block amazon.com links?
 • 18 more this weekend. I've just finished marking them all. We've had a similar crop every weekend for a month or so. Can we block new external links until this blows over? Goddessgood · Mod · Talk 09:16, 20 February 2012 (EST)
 • 8 more last night, and a few yesterday during the day. All marked. Please block and delete. Goddessgood · Mod · Talk 09:30, 21 February 2012 (EST)
 • 13 more spam accounts since last post. We're averaging more than 8 new spammer accounts a day. All have been marked (thanks Mockery!). Please block and delete. Goddessgood · Mod · Talk 09:09, 22 February 2012 (EST)
 • At least a dozen more. Averaging more than 9 new spammer accounts a day. All marked and tagged. Please block and delete. Goddessgood · Mod · Talk 09:50, 23 February 2012 (EST)
 • A relatively quiet night. Only 5 or 6 new spam accounts. Marked and tagged, please block and delete. Goddessgood · Mod · Talk 09:54, 24 February 2012 (EST)
 • Another busy weekend. Averaging more than 11 new spam accounts a day. All marked and tagged, please block and delete. Goddessgood · Mod · Talk 11:48, 27 February 2012 (EST)
 • 10 more since yesterday. They're far and away drowning out any actual content. Marked and tagged, you know the drill. Goddessgood · Mod · Talk 09:56, 28 February 2012 (EST)
 • I'd hoped it had been quieting down a bit, but there were 19 more new accounts yesterday and last night. Marked and tagged, please block and delete. Goddessgood · Mod · Talk 10:35, 1 March 2012 (EST)
 • Holy wow. Thanks very much, Mockery, for tagging all those spam pages. We're up over an average of 14 new spamming accounts a day. Any chance we can get some attention on this soonish? Goddessgood · Mod · Talk 20:02, 3 March 2012 (EST)
 • Well, after a banner weekend, there's an average of 17 new spammer accounts a day. I've just been keeping track since the last time you deleted them, which was Feb 17th. In about two and a half weeks, we've gotten nearly new 300 spam accounts on this wiki. Goddessgood · Mod · Talk 10:14, 5 March 2012 (EST)

Bodhisattva talk · contribs · Exalted Wiki Administrator 15:11, 5 March 2012 (EST): I'll get to this after my staff meeting today.

Thanks for cleaning them up. Goddessgood · Mod · Talk 16:43, 6 March 2012 (EST)

Bodhisattva talk · contribs · Exalted Wiki Administrator 18:04, 6 March 2012 (EST): You're welcome. When I know stuff needs cleaning, I get to it as soon as I can. :)
It's pretty much an every day thing anymore :( I dunno, people's tolerances are different, but it kind of feels like I my house is getting broken into every night. Every morning I get to come in and clean up the mess the burglars left behind. Goddessgood · Mod · Talk 09:46, 7 March 2012 (EST)

Bodhisattva talk · contribs · Exalted Wiki Administrator 10:45, 7 March 2012 (EST): Believe me, I understand it. It's only been since I stepped back from the game that I've actually had any consistent help here. It's very nice. :)
@GG: With any luck, we've just put a stop to the spam, at least for the moment.
@Bodhi: You should probably announce this on the Community Portal in case some people are wondering why they can't edit. This is what I put up; feel free to copy/adapt/whatever if you want. You may or may not have error messages on Exalted - I have some vague memory that that's actually a MediaWiki bug which has probably been fixed by 1.16. Robin Hood (Official Worker Caste Jadeborn) → talk 00:14, 8 March 2012 (EST)
Neep! *hugs* I was wondering why it was so quiet last night. Now I know. It's because of the awesome. *happydance* Goddessgood · Mod · Talk 09:24, 8 March 2012 (EST)

(←)  Weiyi - Hopefully it's just a random spammer who got lucky. Robin Hood (Official Worker Caste Jadeborn) → talk 05:47, 22 March 2012 (EDT)

I've noticed an increase in rapid-fire account creations with suspicious usernames (usually 5+ at a time). Maybe it's me being oversensitive, but what do you think of instituting an autoban on accounts with no edits within 60 days after account creation? There have been a couple of instances of accounts sitting dormant for a while only to start spamming months later. Goddessgood · Mod · Talk 19:03, 26 March 2012 (EDT)

Just a slightly off-topic comment here: this bot seems to have hit more than one wiki recently. We saw a bunch over at UESP too. I can't tell if they've hit WODWiki since we're still on an older version of the software, but I kind of take it for granted that they hit there too. Robin Hood (Official Worker Caste Jadeborn) → talk 23:09, 26 March 2012 (EDT)

Bodhisattva talk · contribs · Exalted Wiki Administrator 08:14, 27 March 2012 (EDT): I'm fine with the auto-ban on suspicious-looking usernames that have no activity after 60 days.
Bodhisattva talk · contribs · Exalted Wiki Administrator 10:59, 29 March 2012 (EDT): Addendum: How far back do we want to go? Do we want to create a separate marker tag with a datestamp to flag accounts to be checked after 60 days? It'll take a long, long while to go back through the thousands of user-accounts in the queue and block inactive ones. That's a major job; a job for a bot under my credentials, probably.

RRimmel 16:47, 29 March 2012 (EDT) WOW what are you options here, can you actually change the new account requirements? Maybe have it white list where an invitation has to be sent or maybe they have to have an account on the Forums or something. There were like 20 yesterday.

No Server Admin?

I don't know if you've had any reason to notice, but I tried to e-mail Sara a couple of days ago, and the e-mail bounced. I'm guessing that means that we have no server admin we can contact at the moment. I tried writing to CCP Games, but so far, no response. I've found a couple of other possible contacts that I know are real live people who still work at White Wolf/CCP if we need to go through them, but I'll wait a few more days and see if CCP Games gets back to me. Just thought I'd let you know on the rather unlikely chance that you have some urgent need for a server admin and then discover you can't reach anybody. Even if I don't contact them often, I do like to know who to get in touch with for things like rights changes, server-level wiki issues, etc. Robin Hood (Official Worker Caste Jadeborn) → talk 04:48, 21 January 2012 (EST)

Summary Template

For some reason there are a few holdout pages that I can't edit to remove this template call. It's not doing anything, in fact it seems to be a hold over from a bad copy-paste job. The last few pages are here (except for my user page, which is just a note to myself to finish it off). Every time I try to load, edit and submit the changes, I get a timeout error and it doesn't go through. I've been trying every so often across about 3 weeks with no luck. Robin's bot had trouble, too, though he tells me that's not surprising. Any advice/help? Goddessgood · Mod · Talk 12:43, 2 February 2012 (EST)

Bodhisattva talk · contribs · Exalted Wiki Administrator 21:54, 2 February 2012 (EST): I can't seem to edit those pages, either. There must be a problem deeper in the system.
Yipee! It seems to be working (better) now :) Dunno what happened, but I'll pull the rest of them down and start making some of the tweaks I've been wanting to. Goddessgood · Mod · Talk 11:57, 6 March 2012 (EST)

Book Template

I'm going to be changing the Book template to fix the link to "buy a hardcopy". Right now it's hardcoded to lead you to the WW store, but that store doesn't have everything, nor will it in the future since the advent of print on demand from Drive Thru RPG has been set in stone. I'm going to remove the hard coding and update the links to all the books. It's gonna take me a while, but I just thought I'd give y'all a heads up. Goddessgood · Mod · Talk 13:32, 7 February 2012 (EST)

Work should be done now. We will need to update the pages again in the future when other PoD titles become available. Goddessgood · Mod · Talk 15:18, 7 February 2012 (EST)

Heya, I'm posting this both here and on Robin's page. I've created a 2.5e template for FF charms as we discussed last year. It's messy as all get out, but at least it's a start. I've asked Hatewheel on the forums if the 2.5e that's being released soon will require a new format like this and he said it won't, so I'm not planning on creating more of these templates (i.e. 2.5eSolCharm and so on). I'll just be wandering around and tagging the Charms with 2.5e updates for the near term. We may want to create a new way to display 2.5e info other than that, but that's a discussion for after it comes out. Goddessgood · Mod · Talk 13:47, 20 February 2012 (EST)

E-mail Hacked

Just FYI, your e-mail looks to have been hacked. I just got a PDF with a hidden Javascript applet in it, which I'm assuming you didn't send, and given the code-hiding, I'm assuming it's a virus. Robin Hood (Official Worker Caste Jadeborn) → talk 15:03, 19 March 2012 (EDT)

I got a message from you with an attachment as well. To be on the safe side, I'm going to delete it. Goddessgood · Mod · Talk 15:10, 19 March 2012 (EDT)
Bodhisattva talk · contribs · Exalted Wiki Administrator 18:32, 19 March 2012 (EDT): It was an e-mail hack from Raleigh, NC. Delete it to be on the safe side.

Source fixes

The code to automatically move the Source templates out of the text parameter and into the new parameters is ready to go. The current version is restricted to Artifact and related templates and to Artifact space, but all that's easily changeable...I just wanted to make sure it didn't do anything even remotely unexpected. Also, as you'd expect, it's limited to only fixing up sources that are inside the template's text parameter, so pages like Collar of Dawn's Cleansing Light, where the sources are outside of the Artifact template, will remain unaltered.

The one small limitation of my code is that it assumes there'll only be zero or one original "source" parameters that may be duplicated in the sources at the bottom of the text. If there are already more (e.g., source2, source3, etc.), it'll just add any sources in the text to the end of the existing ones without trying to figure out if there might be duplicates. I don't really see this being an issue since few if any templates should have those parameters unless we've already fixed up the sources, but I thought I'd mention it in case we see one or two.

I'm thinking of letting it do about 20 or 30 edits later tonight, then I'll stop it and we can look over what it's done one last time (which is probably a good idea, since I've done a near-total rewrite on the code). If everything's okay, I can let it run through its full cycle tomorrow. Does that sound like a reasonable plan to everyone?

Since I know it's been a while, here's a shortened example of what'll change, taken from Scepter of Peace and Order:

becomes

Robin Hood (Official Worker Caste Jadeborn) → talk 19:39, 25 March 2012 (EDT)

Just to update, I've now let it run on 25 entries in total—the page used above as an example plus 24 more. It failed on one (Steelsilk Sails) in a way that puzzles me, since a few edits later, it succeeded on one that seems to me to have the exact same pattern. I've reverted that one page for now and I'll investigate, but overall, it looks like it's done everything else right. I'd appreciate confirmation that I haven't overlooked anything. Robin Hood (Official Worker Caste Jadeborn) → talk 21:30, 25 March 2012 (EDT)
Okay, found the problem there: Oadenol's Codex isn't linked, and my Regex is expecting a link. I'm damned if I can get it to figure out the info properly without a link, but I have, at least, stopped it from simply erasing the offending source. For the time being, it will simply skip over pages with unlinked sources, just as it does with other source types it can't handle. If it turns out there are a lot of leftovers, I'll have another look at it, but I expect they'll be relatively few and we can just fix those ones by hand. Robin Hood (Official Worker Caste Jadeborn) → talk 21:55, 25 March 2012 (EDT)

Bodhisattva talk · contribs · Exalted Wiki Administrator 07:59, 26 March 2012 (EDT): This is looking pretty good. Thanks for all your hard work! I'd love for you to teach me how to use the bot some day.

Figuring out how to build a bot wasn't really all that complex except for the rather scant documentation. It was definitely a process, though, as I'll describe soon. To start, I just downloaded DotNetWikiBot and went from there. In the end, most jobs revolve around the same basic architecture (C# code, but typed off the top of my head, so I make no promises):
<pre style="white-space:-moz-pre-wrap; white-space:-pre-wrap; white-space:-o-pre-wrap; white-space:pre-wrap; word-wrap:break-word;">using DotNetWikiBot; public class MyClass { public void MyFunction() { Site mySite = new Site(site URL and login info); PageList pl = new PageList(mySite); pl.FillFromWhateverFunction(); // There are several built-in functions that'll handle most of what you need. foreach (Page p in pl) { p.Load(); p.text = p.text + "\n\nBodhi wuz here!"; // Example, obviously...I really don't suggest you do this! :P p.Save("Edit Summary", IsMinor); } } }</pre>
Of course, once you've got that working, then the "process" begins: you then have to add in a few more things like Sleep statements or similar coding so that you're not flooding the wiki with edits and blocking everyone else out, catching errors (like if something triggered a Captcha check or if there's an edit conflict), maybe checking for if you've actually made any changes to the page before you save it (unless null saves are desirable, of course, which they sometimes are), building up some logging or a results page, and so on and so forth.
